Why a man disguised as a priest would stuff garlic in a corpse’s mouth at a funeral is the last thing NYPD Homicide Detective Louis Martelli thought he’d ever have to investigate. After all, everyone knows vampires aren’t real! Or are they? Which is why Martelli has plenty of surprises in store for him in Theodore Jerome Cohen’s new mystery/thriller “Lilith…Demon of the Night” (ISBN 9780984920907, TJC Press, 2011).
After a man dressed in a long priest’s robe and a black, low-crowned, wide-brimmed ecclesiastical hat walked into a Catholic church just prior to the start of a funeral service, stuffed garlic into the deceased’s mouth, and pumped a bullet into the corpse, Detective Louis Martelli finds himself pursuing what may be his most puzzling case. Even more mystifying is the coroner’s report that the deceased, far from having died of respiratory failure and a possible heart attack, had been injected with a lethal dose of Philippine Cobra venom.
Martelli and his partner, Detective Sean O’Keeffe, soon uncover a series of similar murders that lead them to a modern-day vampire cult, a strange woman named ‘Lilith,’ and a serial killer with a score to settle. Morbid twists and turns finally put Martelli and O’Keefe on the serial killer’s tail. But can they stop him before he murders his last victim and makes good his escape?
After the success of his social commentaries on Wall Street, the US government, and the biotechnology industry in his previous Martelli thrillers, “Death by Wall Street” and “House of Cards,” Theodore Jerome Cohen wasn’t sure what to write about next. That’s when a friend challenged him to write a vampire novel. Not interested in the supernatural or romantic aspect of such works, Cohen decided to do something different by blending true crime and the pseudo-supernatural to introduce readers to a modern-day vampire cult.
Once “bitten” by the shocking opening of “Lilith,” readers become quickly hooked by this new and unusual vampire thriller. Paige Lovitt of Reader Views states, “[I]f you are thinking what I was thinking, think again…This is what made this story so enjoyable to me; I did not expect the story to head off in the direction that it did.”
Author Cohen is pleased by such responses, stating, “The book will take readers to places in their minds most have never visited. And when all is said and done, isn’t that the purpose of a novel?”
